Hakini Mudra

With fingers pressed together and the heels of the hands pulled apart, raise your arms overhead in either a seated or standing position. Take a moment to remind yourself of what is most important to you at a deep core level. Make space in your life to soften the outer gaze that delineates form into a sense of seperateness. In truth, all manifestations of energy, both sentient and non, are deeply interwoven. The energy that we bring to the world matters! Taking time to nurture and balance your whole being and reminding yourself of how you want to show up in the world is a great offering to the infinite web of life.

Hakini Mudra can be used to balance brain energy. It is symbolic of left and right brain currents uniting and finding harmony. Connected to the energy of the 6th chakra (Ajna Chakra / third eye), Hakini Mudra is intended to help us perceive th...

Good Afternoon. We are finding our way out of a super charged energetic weekend. The blue moon on Friday also marked Guru Purnima --- the Guru or teacher full moon. The weekend commenced with the cross quarter day of Lammas. We have now reached the zenith of summer as we now sail on through harvest days and into Autumn. I chose a few meditation and yoga practice tools that are designed to remind us of our highest aims, to honor the light that dwells within all of our hearts, and to add a dash of summer fun.

Today's Practice:

Mudra - Uttarabodhi Mudra - Mudra of Supreme Enlightenment

Also called Vira Mudra and sometimes Kali Mudra. For me this mudra exemplifies two complementary halves coming together to  create a sense of focus, direction, and determination.

I like to use this mudra in asana practice at times as a way to engage the arm muscles evenly. With even exten...

Today's meditation moment finds us in high summer. If you are feeling the heat, it may be nice for you to just sit and chill for a moment. Sit by a natural water source or play some watery music to help soothe your soul today. The photos for today were taken during a creek walk at a local park. Man it felt good just to get our feet wet in the creek surrounded by mother natures calming green canopy.

Meditation Pose

Just get comfortable - breathe in fully - breathe out fully - let yourself have a moment to soften.

Meditation Mantra

"So Hum" ---- affirming "I am"..... I am here..... I am calm..... I am open...... I am is totally up to you.

You can coordinate the mantra with your breath to help you learn to focus your mind over an extended period of time to encourage a deeper inner connection and feeling of calm. You might breathe in "So" and breathe out "Ham." Find a rhythm t...

The big star we call the Sun will be moving into the constellation Leo tonight (July 22, 2015) at 11:30 pm.  Can you feel the shift?  It can be quite noticeable since we are leaving the lunar ruled sign of Cancer, that can have us feeling moody and deeply self reflective, and entering the self confident energy of Leo.

On the personality level you may find yourself standing up straighter, more energized to go out and do things and move away from self doubt.  Cancer and the moon that rules it are Yin and associated with Shakti.

Leo which is ruled by the Sun is confident and outgoing. It is Yang and associated with Shiva. We in the Northern Hemisphere are experiencing the height of Summer. We feel the heat and the emotional outward energy that the Sun/Leo can pull out of us. On a personality level, Leo can be the “Celebrity or Movie Star Energy”- flashy, self absorbed a...

I've recently had more and more students ask me about the more subtle aspects of our Yoga practices. Meditation, mantra, mudra, pranayama, and philosophical studies are tools and techniques that you can use to take you deeper into the heart of practice where peace, harmony, and resilience take root. I'm planning to do my best to highlight some aspects of my personal meditation and yoga in action practices each week in way of inspiration to help you develop or deepen your own practice.

My personal practice has developed over many years and has included the study of a wide range of traditions. I've taken the tools from the traditions that naturally resonated the most with me and have assimilated in a way that supports me and my values. I believe this to be a great benefit of living in our age and time. As my practice includes elements from different traditions, I 'll do my...

In order to support my great teacher, Sianna Sherman, along with Yoga Journal, who are kicking off the #yjgoddesschallenge, I wanted to take some time to share a little bit more about the focus of today’s challenge as well as make the most of an opportunity to share how goddess meditation & practice has been helpful in my life. Today’s challenge pose is Astavakrasana and in this challenge  is dedicated to the fierce and loving goddess, Durga. I offer my thanks to Erin for playing with the poses with me this afternoon at Shine. We laughed our way through this challenging arm balance and then created a modified pose to share that could be a nice alternative to embodying the qualities of Durga.

My personal relationship with the goddess energy has been one of the highlights of my spiritual evolution. Growing up in a strong Catholic househol...

The Energy of Taurus the Bull is with us from April 20- May 21 this year.

The Taurus time and energy is referred to as the “freshly plowed field of springtime, ready for the seed”.

This describes our piece of the Earth in the Northern Hemisphere currently but it  also describes  us at this time. The planet is ready for the seed to pop open and flower and so are we in our body, mind and heart.

When we read about Taurus the descriptors are: slow, steady and stubborn. It is an energy that is fixed and not easily pushed around. It needs time to adjust and assimilate.

I like to think about what is happening in nature right now in relation to the energy of Taurus. The seeds have cracked open. The new life in the form of sprouts and seedlings are pushing their way up and through the ground.

How much will and strength does it take to make that journey from seed to sprout. Th...

Putting this series of AstroAsanas together has changed me on a very deep level.  It has allowed me the opportunity to deeply dive into each sign of the Zodiac in a different way that I have done before.

Like an actor preparing for a role, I allow myself to submerge into the energies of each sign and try to experience life from that perspective for a month or so.

Swimming in the waters of Pisces, the last sign of the Zodiac, has brought me to my knees, in a good way. To my knees in a sign of reverence and humility.

Each of the signs represents a piece of the life journey. The twelve of them together give us clues to how we are experiencing life and love and as I see it, the Life of Yoga.

Each of us has the energy of all twelve signs contained with in us. Some of the energies are are stronger than others and color what our current journey is about.

But the journey ultimate...

I have been studying astrology since the the late 1980’s when Steve and I moved to Colorado and worked with Sun Signs’s and Love Sign’s author, Linda Goodman.  Even when we were studying with Linda, I always found Aquarius a bit of an enigma.

The eclectic sign of consciousness, groups, …………

What does that mean? Group consciousness?

On the mundane level Aquarius is characterized as the absent minded professor, one who has knowledge but not necessarily common sense.

It is about freedom, independence, originality, unexpected, sudden, unpredictable change. inventions, cosmic consciousness, Divine Will………

See what I mean. These descriptors are so ungrounded there is nothing for my mind to hold on to about  Aquarius or Uranus, the planet that rules it.

At the same time, I must also admit, I am fascinated by the Energies it represents and have been since I sta...
