Often when you strain or injure your back, the back muscles and muscles that support the back, seize up in an attempt to brace your back and prevent further injury. This natural reaction is a good thing. But... sometimes the muscles have a hard time letting go of the tension. When you add chronic tension to a low back strain or injury, a chain reaction is enacted where stiffness, tension, and pain get caught in a feedback loop that limits mobility and slows healing. This short exercise or sequence allows the back to rest supported in it's natural alignment without strain. It also allows the muscles to rest in their contracted state. Once the tension begins to dissolve in their protective contracted state you can begin to encourage greater movement and length in the muscles that is necessary for everyday comfort and ease. As is in all things, nothing works for everyone 10...

So far our Meditation Monday series has focused on Mudra and Mantra Meditation Techniques. Today's hand placement may or may not have a particular history but is personally symbolic for me. Placing hands on heart and belly can be very soothing as well as deeply meaningful. Asana practice often focuses on physical body alignment. A complete yoga practice will also help us learn to create inner alignment. By remembering to act in alignment with our gut human nature, spiritual heart, heart, and higher mind we may experience greater personal fulfillment and harmonious living.

Today's seated meditation pose is called Siddhasana. I am showing two variations here. Crossing your ankles in front of each other will allow you to settle into your seat and open your hips more fully. If your knees lift high, you can place yoga props under them for support. As your hips open you may...

The big star we call the Sun will be moving into the constellation Leo tonight (July 22, 2015) at 11:30 pm.  Can you feel the shift?  It can be quite noticeable since we are leaving the lunar ruled sign of Cancer, that can have us feeling moody and deeply self reflective, and entering the self confident energy of Leo.

On the personality level you may find yourself standing up straighter, more energized to go out and do things and move away from self doubt.  Cancer and the moon that rules it are Yin and associated with Shakti.

Leo which is ruled by the Sun is confident and outgoing. It is Yang and associated with Shiva. We in the Northern Hemisphere are experiencing the height of Summer. We feel the heat and the emotional outward energy that the Sun/Leo can pull out of us. On a personality level, Leo can be the “Celebrity or Movie Star Energy”- flashy, self absorbed a...

In order to support my great teacher, Sianna Sherman, along with Yoga Journal, who are kicking off the #yjgoddesschallenge, I wanted to take some time to share a little bit more about the focus of today’s challenge as well as make the most of an opportunity to share how goddess meditation & practice has been helpful in my life. Today’s challenge pose is Astavakrasana and in this challenge  is dedicated to the fierce and loving goddess, Durga. I offer my thanks to Erin for playing with the poses with me this afternoon at Shine. We laughed our way through this challenging arm balance and then created a modified pose to share that could be a nice alternative to embodying the qualities of Durga.

My personal relationship with the goddess energy has been one of the highlights of my spiritual evolution. Growing up in a strong Catholic househol...

I have been studying astrology since the the late 1980’s when Steve and I moved to Colorado and worked with Sun Signs’s and Love Sign’s author, Linda Goodman.  Even when we were studying with Linda, I always found Aquarius a bit of an enigma.

The eclectic sign of consciousness, groups, …………

What does that mean? Group consciousness?

On the mundane level Aquarius is characterized as the absent minded professor, one who has knowledge but not necessarily common sense.

It is about freedom, independence, originality, unexpected, sudden, unpredictable change. inventions, cosmic consciousness, Divine Will………

See what I mean. These descriptors are so ungrounded there is nothing for my mind to hold on to about  Aquarius or Uranus, the planet that rules it.

At the same time, I must also admit, I am fascinated by the Energies it represents and have been since I sta...

Capricorn (December 21- January 20) has two festive Holidays nestled into its time frame.  We have Christmas with the celebration of the coming of the gifted Child and New Year’s which marks the first day of a new calendar year.

With all this celebrating it is interesting that many people are not so jovial. As a matter of fact many people in the Northern Hemisphere are languid and many even deal with depression at this time.

Instead of wanting to be social, many of us feel a desire to literally  go inside, into our homes and also into our own being. We feel the need to hibernate and recharge like some animals and the plants we see in our gardens.

Such is the energy at the time of Capricorn. The Winter Solstice is marked by the sun moving into Capricorn. From that moment, the days begin to get longer. Although we know that to be true scientifically, we still feel the...

The average Americans find themselves sitting more than is really healthy for their bodies. So while you may not be an excessive sitter, you likely know someone who is. Most people will benefit from this basic hip flexor stretch that has variations for different bodies.

The hip flexors are the muscles in the front of the hip that bring the knee closer to the body when we walk, run, sit, and curl-up. The major hip flexors are the psoas and the quadriceps.  A common cause of some types of low back pain is tight hip flexors.  In our Yoga practice we move through variations quadricep stretches, lunges, and back bends to lengthen and release tension from these powerful forward movers.  While there are dramatic poses that help expand the hip flexors range of motion, a basic thigh stretch is perfect for everyday body balance.

For a great basic hip flexor stretch, come...

As you read this blog entry, think of some regal music like Trumpet Voluntary or Ode to Joy. “Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da……. Something with big horns and lots and lots of grand energy.

Making an entrance on to our AstroAsana stage is Leo, the sign of the Lion, the king, or as the Egyptians called him, RA, the sun god. Leo is ruled by the Sun in both personality astrology and esoteric astrology so it can be hard for Leo to not feel like the center of attention with all the other planets moving around it.

Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac and rules the fifth house. It is concerned with romance, children, entertainment and creativity. Leo’s make good leaders and they come across to their adoring fans as very confident and assured. They have a magnetism that is hard to ignore. There is something regal and majestic about the energy. It has heat or warmth that can attract...
