AstroAsana for July - Leo

As you read this blog entry, think of some regal music like Trumpet Voluntary or Ode to Joy. “Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da……. Something with big horns and lots and lots of grand energy.

Making an entrance on to our AstroAsana stage is Leo, the sign of the Lion, the king, or as the Egyptians called him, RA, the sun god. Leo is ruled by the Sun in both personality astrology and esoteric astrology so it can be hard for Leo to not feel like the center of attention with all the other planets moving around it.

Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac and rules the fifth house. It is concerned with romance, children, entertainment and creativity. Leo’s make good leaders and they come across to their adoring fans as very confident and assured. They have a magnetism that is hard to ignore. There is something regal and majestic about the energy. It has heat or warmth that can attract you like a moth to a flame.

Leo is the second fire sign of the zodiac, so where Aries, the first fire sign and the first sign of the Zodiac says, I AM, Leo says I WILL. The fire signs are about energy and enthusiasm. Aries is the head and impulsive, Leo is the Heart, the steady controlled fire of affection.

Leo can be big, arrogant and boastful in the unevolved version but as they learn to tap into the inner heart center (which is the area of the body Leo rules) they come to realize that their warmth must be given to all. The energy of the sun (Leo) is for everyone to bask in. That warmth can make us comfortable or it can scorch us. Leo’s energy can tap into its creative side as it learns to be the servant of the SELF instead of the ego. It opens the gate to revelation.

This time of the year when the sun is in Leo, we like to go to the beach, enjoy family picnics, attend outside concerts. We soak up the solar, masculine energy of the Sun. We like to feel the warmth on our bodies. Many of us feel more energized and alive in the height of summer.

Although there is all this time and energy spent on entertaining and amusing, there is something in us during the Summer that calls us to be creative. It wants us to use the energy of the sun to grow and evolve. The plants do. Our hemisphere blossoms as the sun moves closer to us.

Leo has at its core a need to illuminate. On it’s deepest level it can show mastery over its self and the lessons of life. When that happens, Leo can be the charismatic teacher that can light the way for us.

We all have an inner Leo.

Can we find the parts of us that need to be illuminated while the Sun shines bright on us? Maybe there is something we would like to master. The season of Leo is a great time to try it out. The energy is warm and stable. And like all the signs it is full of possibilities.

There is a cool story that says baby lion cubs are born still born and that it is the roar of the mother Lioness that wakes them up. They must be awakened to life with a ROAR!
