Yoga Basics Practice

This is our most popular class category and includes our Basics, Mixed Level, and a few other options. Our main priority at Shine is to offer high quality yoga and integrated wellness practices that serve individual goals in our group class settings. Our teachers "teach to the students" in the class. All teachers come prepared with a plan for a class but may adapt it to help students learn and embody the powerful practices of yoga. Students of different levels are welcome to come to mixed level classes and move through the variations of postures and practices that best suit their needs. Focus is placed on functional well-being in the common postures and flows of yoga, body alignment, muscle and energy balance, and total well-being which includes acknowledgement of body, mind, heart, and soul. Rather than students being led through a practice where the teacher practices with you, our teachers are here to support, instruct, guide, and inspire our practitioners in a mindful and meaningful way.

Our current offerings in this category include the following. More detailed descriptions can be found on our MindBody scheduler. Click the big red "sign up" button at the top of the page and then navigate to your class of choice. There you can find more details and teacher bios. (Scroll down below the calendar list to find descriptions of what we consider our "Level 2" class offerings.)

Because our focus in on health and well-being, which does include but does not over-emphasize the speed of flow, most of our flow classes move at a pace that allows students to do small adjustments to the postures in the flow. We do however have some classes that put more emphasis on the flow than the postures themselves. Students who like to flow may enjoy the following classes. Listed in strongest flow order first.

  • Vinyasa Flow - Moderately paced hour long continuous vinyasa flow ( with options to rest at your discretion!).
    > Mondays 5 - 6 pm (begin May 22 - no class May 29th).

  • Align & Flow L2/3 - A progressive & variable mix of alignment work in held postures sequences and mindful vinyasa flow. This is a moderately paced class with "yogis choice" which gives options for practitioners to work in more or less vinyasa flow between posture holds and sequences. We build on the basics and work actions that will support intermediate & advanced yoga postures like inversions, arm-balance variations, and deeper backbends & hip-openers.
    > Wednesdays 7:15 - 8:30 pm

  • Align & Flow Level 1/2 - Good mix of postural alignment work with gentle flow & transitions. Variable level class.
    > Thursdays 10 - 11 am

  • Progressive Flow - Progressive Flow is a mixed level vinyasa flow practice. As most classes do at Shine, the class moves at a mindful pace in order to allow conscious movement and adaptations in posture to suit individual needs in the group setting. A sweet warm-up progresses towards variations of some of yoga's fun and challenging postures.

Deep Level Practices
Deep Practice

These classes are for experienced yoga practitioners. While we do work towards more challenging postures in these classes, the physical practice is less of a priority than the deeper dimensions of yoga practice which include a capacity for subtle body awareness and an ability to be responsive to the body's messages when working through asana variations so that the physical yoga practice supports total well-being. These classes tend to be longer in length and are likely include yoga philosophical themes, anatomy & alignment aspects, pranayama (breath & energy practices), meditation, and relaxation. Depending on the class type, there may be periods of strong flow (with options to rest as needed) and/or longer postural holds. These tend to be our most physically challenging classes but options are always offered for those who need variations and/or modifications.

  • The Deep End - A YogaFio® Practice - Let's dive in to the deep end of the yoga pool. This 90-minute class is for experienced yoga practitioners who are interested in a full-spectrum yoga practice that focuses on subtle body awareness and responsiveness in posture work. While we do work towards some of the more challenging yoga postures and thus build skills of fitness, the emphasis remains on total-being well-being (body/mind/heart/soul). As a YogaFio® class, a primary focus in on functional alignment and muscle/energy balance to support healthy action in asana (posture) and vinyasa (flow) practice. 90-minutes gives us time to explore the deeper dimensions of yoga in a full-spectrum practice that moves at a mindful pace and is chock full of variations to suit individual needs and goals. In addition to a mix of posture and mindful flow work, classes are inspired by traditional yoga themes and are likely to include pranayama (breath & energy practice), mindfulness & meditation techniques, and will finish with relaxation.
    > Saturdays 10 - 11:30

  • Empowered & Embodied - Designed for experienced practitioners which may include advanced beginner through adept yogis (the class is not effective for new beginners unfamiliar with safe pose alignment). We explore a variety of practices to improve our awareness and wellbeing of our physical, mental, emotional, and intuitive systems of the body. The approaches are based on science, mindfulness principles, and experiential learning through slow movement, breathing and prana/qi flows, and perceiving our mental and emotional patterns. We practice easy to moderately difficult yoga poses, focused-attention meditations, deep breathing, psyche exercises, and more.
    > Sundays 10:15 - 11:45

Saturday May 6th 12 - 1 with Kate Noble

This is the 8-limbed practice which includes lifestyle directions called the Yamas & Niyamas, Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath & energy practice), Pratyahara (mastery of senses & perception), Dharana (focus & concentration), Dhyana (the meditative state), Samadhi (spiritual integration.)

Saturday May 27th 12 - 1 with Annie Weisbrod

Annie will introduce the 20-Senses Meditation.

Saturday June 3rd 12 - 1 with Wendy Andersen

Wendy’s own meditation practice has been moving in the direction of non-dual mindfulness over the last few years, and this is also what she shares with her students. In our practice together, we will look closely at our identification with the conditioned egoic mind and ground ourselves in the present moment with breath centered awareness. Let’s bring an attitude of curiosity and kindness as we open ourselves to the expansive nature of consciousness and settle more fully into a state of pure being.
